Using the Time Steel is identical to using the regular Time, which in turn is pretty much the same as using the original Pebble. Everything that those watches do well — seamless push notifications to your wrist, basic fitness tracking, the stupidly great flick-to-activate backlight — the Steel also does well. I’ll let you read our thoughts on the Time separately; everything in terms of functionality and software is identical. You’ll need to install apps, watch faces and adjust what turns up in your Timeline. There’s a series of menu screens dedicated to different modes and apps for which you can use the physical buttons on the side of the Time Steel to scroll. There weren’t many dedicated Pebble apps that I found myself using on a regular basis. I did make good use of the music player app, however, which works well with third-party music services and comes in handy when you’re crammed into a tube carriage and might have to risk touching someone to innocently get to your phone. For navigation, there’s a single button on the left of the display and three on the right. Unlike the Time, the buttons are significantly less stiff to press, something that my colleague reviewing the Time was critical of. Perhaps the additional room in the Time Steel’s body, thanks to an extra 1mm thickness, helps matters somewhat. The original Pebble Steel was a great smartwatch in a surprisingly fashionable costume. Its successor, the Time Steel, keeps the sex appeal but crams more brains inside The Pebble Time Steel doesn’t feel as radical a leap forward as the original Pebble was to the Pebble Steel. However, the stainless-steel band and watch face combo and improved buttons will be enough to convince some to opt for it over the Time.

However, The Pebble Time Steel isn’t always going to make it to that 10-day mark. You’ll need to tinker with the settings and put the new Quiet Time mode to good use to increase your chances. Visit our corporate site. There are eight open slots for third-party apps on the Pebble, and when you remove things from the watch they go into a "locker" in the phone app; swapping things around just takes a few taps. It’s not a perfect system — most of the coolest Pebble tricks like remote camera operation require their own companion apps on your phone — but it’s simple, it makes sense, and it works. (And it will all work with the original Pebble as well.)There's one thing that we think all smartwatches should be good at, and that's holding charge for at least a few days. We might be used to sticking our phones on charge every night, but it's a different story when it comes to our watches. Thankfully the Pebble Steel really excels in this area, lasting in our tests between four and five days. Of course, your mileage will vary based on the number of notifications you receive, how much you interact with Pebble, and how frequently the watchface updates. Watchfaces which display seconds will deplete the battery faster than watchfaces which only update every minute. The screen is also usable on the Time Steel! I’ve been using a regular Time for the last month, and the screen is way too dim and washed out. The Time Steel still doesn’t ‘pop’ anything like the OLED display you’ll find on the Apple Watch, but it’s very usable. The backlight is noticeably brighter, and the display seems closer to the surface of the glass, which makes reading texts in sunlight actually possible.

Gone too is the rubber band, replaced with either a leather or steel strap. You get both in the box, a nice touch we say, though we instantly took a liking to steel version. It resembles the classic Casio digital watches, with links and a folding clasp. The leather one on the other hand is fine, but it feels a bit cheap. What does the acquisition mean for existing Pebble smartwatches? Pebble has stated: “functionality or service quality may be reduced down the road”. What this means exactly we can’t be sure at this point, but this is worth keeping in mind if you do decide to pick up a Pebble Time Steel. But I’ve always been suckered by what Pebble offers: a watch that is first and foremost a watch, with a thousand different quirky watchfaces I can customize, which saves me the occasional need to pull my phone out. For me, that’s all a smartwatch should be, and the Time Steel does it better than anyone else. Pebble began shipping the successor to its wildly popular smartwatch, Pebble Steel ($249), this week and I Pebble Steel follows one of the most successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaigns of 2012..

Unfortunately, it isn’t particularly sharp; overall quality pales in comparison to other smartwatches. Fortunately, most of the content you’ll consume on the Time Steel will be pretty basic. If you’re expecting to get some Tinder action on the go, you’d be better direct your attention to other smartwatches. Both bands are of high quality, not bottom-of-the-bucket straps like we saw on the original Pebble, and we’re thankful for that.

The Pebble Steel's beautiful stainless-steel design, combined with the new appstore, make it our favorite smartwatch yet. We love that Pandora, Yelp and ESPN have made their way to the Pebble platform. The ability to see all of your most recent notifications is another plus. We just wish we could store more apps at once.Battery life has also been excellent. Pebble lists Pebble Steel as lasting 5-7 days per charge. Typically, this is what we got using the original Pebble, and we were happy to learn the Steel is no different. Receiving hundreds of notifications (SMS, IM, email, Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, Instagram, etc.) each and every day, we were able to last upwards of seven days per charge. It works well on the Time Steel, so long as you’ve correctly configured which apps are pulled into the Timeline. It’s from tiny Pebble, a hardware startup that so captured the hearts and minds of gadget fans in 2012 that it shattered Kickstarter records on its way to millions in crowdsourced funding. The first Pebble watch, released almost exactly a year ago, finally made the smartwatch accessible to regular people. At $150, it’s almost cheap, it works, and it doesn’t try to do too much: it flashes notifications about texts and emails and phone calls from your smartphone, and if you’re feeling particularly saucy you could control music playback on your wrist. Compared to wildly ambitious but unfocused competitors like the Samsung Galaxy Gear and the Metawatch, the Pebble is an object lesson in doing more with less.

Initial set-up is fairly straightforward, you just install the Pebble app on your phone, turn on Bluetooth, pair and you're away. There's a few preinstalled watch faces to try and notifications will straight away start to come flooding to your wrist. Pretty much the first feature most folk comment on when I’ve shown them the Time Steel is the bezel. It’s huge, even bigger than the one on the Pebble Time. Pebble has promised timeline support for earlier Pebble and Pebble Steel models, but has yet to reveal an exact date when that will arrive (presumably after Pebble Time has shipped) It’s a fantastic improvement over the introductory model. The new Pebble Steel features a stainless steel body, with Corning Gorilla Glass covering the screen instead of plastic. The construction definitely feels premium, and it adds a bit of weight as a result.. The big visual difference between the Time and Time Steel is the extra metal. The watch case is made from marine-grade stainless steel and it feels much nicer against the skin. What hasn’t improved, at least on iOS, is how notifications are handled. Any applications which appear in Notification Center will be sent to your Pebble. You can toggle notifications off, but that’s an extreme measure as it also means you won’t get them on your phone. And that’s unfortunate. Our only quibbles about the battery were that a few times it would suddenly drop from 20% to 0% in a matter of moments. Charging is quick, however, and we managed to get a fully juiced up Pebble Steel in little more than two hours.

Take heed, though: these applications are quite limited in functionality by their very nature. While we’ve found some of them quite useful thanks to that streamlined, bare-bones execution, those looking for a more fully-featured experience should look elsewhere for now.The store is broken down into a section for Apps and a separate page for Watchfaces. The App page sports an attractive, colorful interface that sorts apps into categories, including Daily, Tools & Utilities, Notifications, Remotes, Fitness and Games. The other big pieces of the Pebble Steel puzzle are the updated Android and iOS apps and the new app store. I wasn’t able to try the Android app since it isn’t ready yet, but the new iOS app is far superior to the original. The app store works well — you can quickly find new apps and watch faces and send them to the Pebble, where they’re listed at the bottom of the main menu.Still, the Notifications menu fills a much-needed void that was missing from the platform's previous version. For instance, if you don't want others around you to see messages as they appear, you can now check them and view them at a more suitable time without reaching for your phone.

The smartwatch that started it all is going high-end. The $249 Pebble Steel places the familiar features and intuitive interface of the original model in an elegant design that you'll want to wear during your next business meeting or special occasion. With a brand-new Pebble appstore, apps from partners such as ESPN and Yelp, and a classier look, the Pebble Steel could be the smartwatch to wear in 2014. Here's why.Overall, we'd like to see an e-paper touch screen, a color display or both at this price, but overall, the Pebble Steel is easy to use. The Pebble Steel attempts to introduce a more conventional look to a very functional smartwatch. Does it succeed? We find out in this Pebble Steel review

There is a pretty major caveat, however. Not just any aftermarket band will work with Pebble Steel. It uses a custom binding with a center column, which will make it rather difficult – if not impossible – to find aftermarket bands. We’re hopeful third-party manufacturers will make bands specifically for Pebble Steel, but whether that will actually happen is up in the air.Alongside the release of the Pebble Steel, Pebble has spruced up its app and released an official app store, so no need to go hunting for the best apps. The store is clean and easy to navigate, while it makes finding apps super easy. Once you've downloaded something (check out our best Pebble Steel apps feature if you're struggling) it'll sync across to your watch and that's it. In my opinion, unless you’re going to fork out for the more expensive stainless-steel Time Steel, you’d be better off going for the Time. This may mean having to deal with a little more plastic, but on the positive side it’s very similar in look and its bezel doesn’t look as monstrous.Although not everyone applauded the minor internal bumps from Pebble this year, we have to admit we’re fans of the “walk first, run later” mentality. Pebble’s future, as we learned late last year, will be heavily dependent upon third-party development support. Completely overhauling the internals and, more specifically, the display could have upset the existing developers who have helped build a strong community around the product and brand. The original Pebble was made of polycarbonate. It scratched easily, it was bulky, and it suffered display problems, such as screen tearing, light refraction problems, and more. The same can’t be said for the body. Although minor, there are tiny nicks on some of the outermost parts of our Pebble Steel’s frame. They’re only truly visible under close inspection. The most visible sign of wear on Pebble Steel is its underbody, which is riddled with scratches. Seeing as this will be hidden and pressed against your wrist most of the time, this likely won’t bother too many wearers. If you'd like to narrow down your options, you can also browse through various categories, such as Coffee and Tea, Restaurants, and Nightlife. We enjoyed using the Pebble app overall but wish we could call vendors directly from the watch. Pressing a button to prompt your phone to call the number listed on Yelp would be much quicker than typing it into your phone's keypad. I have had my Pebble Time Steel since its release. I enjoy all of the features and apps that it has. This review is from Pebble - Time Steel Smartwatch 38mm Leather - Black Leather

The Pebble Time Steel is an all-metal version of the crowdfunded iPhone and Android compatible smartwatch - and it lasts for an astounding 150 hours per charge When it comes to the Time Steel’s straps, you can choose between leather or a stainless-steel band – the latter is significantly more attractive. They’re the same 22mm removable straps as those on the Time, so you can change them easily enough. This also means that the Time Steel will support Pebble’s smart straps, although none have officially turned up yet.To that end, you’re not alone if the $250 price point gives you pause. But if build quality and design mean anything to you, there is no question the extra cash is warranted. Both Michael and I spent an additional $50 on a PVD watch band for our original Pebbles, bringing the prices up to around $200 (if you don’t count the discounted Kickstarter pledge price). Even with a steel band, the original Pebble still doesn’t look or feel nearly as nice as Pebble Steel. Everything from the buttons to the vibrate motor are drastically improved, and the small improvements go a long way toward making Pebble Steel a superior product. Factor in the increased longevity of Gorilla Glass covering the display and a steel chassis, and we have no doubt the $250 is justified.Pebble Steel features the same 1.26-inch (144 by 168 pixel resolution) e-paper display, LED backlight, ARM 80MHz Cortex-M3 CPU, battery, and RAM. It also has all the same sensors as before: 3D accelerometer, e-compass, ambient light sensor, and Bluetooth 4.0 LE. Pebble Steel also carries a water resistance rating of 5 ATM, meaning it’s water-resistant up to 50m – more than enough for swimming, showering, and other water-related activities. The Pebble Steel still isn't designer-watch-beautiful, but it's so much nicer than the original it's The other big pieces of the Pebble Steel puzzle are the updated Android and iOS apps and the new app..

The Pebble Time Steel radically slims down this border, covering most of the front with Gorilla Glass 3 instead What is the difference between Pebble Time Steel and Pebble Steel? Find out which is better and their overall performance in the smartwatch ranking Unlike the Time, the Time Steel can stay powered on for ten days according to Pebble. That’s three more days than the Time and significantly more than all Android Wear watches and the Apple Watch. Even the more sport-centric smartwatches, such as the Fitbit Surge (with the latest update) and the Garmin Vivoactive, can’t match the Time Steel’s ability to get you more than a week’s play.

The Time Steel does have a few particular highlights, though. The buttons, which have consistently sucked on Pebble’s other watches, are way better: not too soft, not too stiff, but just the right amount of firmness for, uh, buttons. Pebble Time Preview: Why Can't All Smartwatches Be This Simple? Before the Apple Watch, there was the Pebble—the smartwatch that raised an incredible $10.3 million That’s the risk for Pebble and every other would-be king of the suddenly hot wearable market — that platform owners like Apple and Google and Microsoft will be able to build true extensions of their operating systems instead of connecting your wrist to your pocket with baling wire and Bluetooth. It’s a danger that might still be years away, but it’s a danger Pebble needs to face head-on: the next goal for Pebble is to go take the Pebble Steel from the best smartwatch you can buy right now to the best smartwatch, period. That’s a tall order, but if the next jump is as big as the jump from the Pebble to the Pebble Steel, the company might just be moving fast enough.
